Aleksandra Stamenkovic's interview: JENNER, HELLCATS & SIGMA EPSILON's Guitarist

1) Hello Aleksandra, it's a great pleasure to be able to carry out this interview with you. To start, please tell us at what age, and how, did you get started in music... You are very young, but you already have an experience...

A: Hello, everyone! I was first interested in music back in 2011, when I was 13 years old. I wanted to play bass guitar but I couldn’t afford it, so I used to borrow it from my sister’s friend. Destiny, however, decided me to become primarily a guitarist. In 2013. I bought my first guitar and that’s how my „journey“ began. Now I’m almost 24, I have 2 releases behind me and I play guitar in 3 bands.

2) Jenner was your first serious participation in a band? Why only girls? Was it the original idea, or did it just happen?

A: Jenner was formed back in December 2013 by me and my sister Marija. Before that we had a glam metal band Cat O’ Nine Tailz in which I played bass guitar. It supposed to be all-girl band, but that story didn’t go well, so we disbanded after 2 years. I started playing guitar in order to form a band that would play heavier music, and Marija supported me. So we started looking for 2 guys that would play with us. It supposed to be something like band Madam X. But that story also didn’t work because we met 2 girls, singer Anđelina and bass player Jana, and that’s how the band started. 

3) We read that you took the name of Dr. Edward Jenner, please tell us about that.

A: Many of you probably don’t know, but if everything turns well, next year I’ll become a doctor myself. I’m on the fifth year of medical studies right now and I think that explains a lot about band’s name. Actually, I decided that would be the name of the band even before the band was formed. I was like second year of highschool, studying microbiology. Dr Edward Jenner is father of immunology. He invented the first vaccine for smallpox.

4) Our sincere congratulations, Dr. Aleksandra!! Seeing the line up changes, Jenner had some problems with the bassists. Why?

A: I would love to know, too, haha. I guess it's a coincidence.

5) Andjelina Mitic was the vocalist from the beginning. Why did she decide to leave, and why did you decide to start singing yourself?

A: Since we released the first album “To live is to suffer” and had a few concerts in 2017, we had to make a break due to pregnancies of drummer Marija, and later bass player Nevena. We didn’t know what will happen to the band, it became very uncertain and stressful for all of us and Anđelina’s interests slowly started to decrease. I could feel it and I completely understand the situation. So we agreed that it’s the best for her to leave the band and do some other things that make her happy. And since I’m the only composer in the band, I sometimes have to record vocals for demos, so I started to practice singing and realised that I can handle both playing guitar and singing.

6) Jenner's debut "To Live is to Suffer" seemed like an excellent álbum, full of powerful Speed Metal themes. Our congratulations, since you are the main songwriter...! Was it what you were looking for? Are you happy about it?

A: Thanks a lot! In fact, it turned out even better than I expected. Sometimes when I listen to it I wonder how I did that. Also, drummer Selena Simić who recorded drums while Marija was on maternity leave, and producer Luka Matković did a great job.

7) Now Jenner have a new e.p., "The Test of Time". Did you practically recorded it by yourself? Why did it happen this way?

A: I recorded everything except drums. Since Marija was on her second maternity leave drums were recorded by our friend Nikola Simonovic. At the same time our former bass player Nevena announced that she was pregnant again, so I didn’t want to waste more time, and decided to record both guitar and bass guitar by myself.

8) Tell us a little bit about this new e.p.. Is it the previous step to a new album soon? You also recorded a video clip...

A: I don’t think that it is a previous step to a new album, unfortunatelly it’s more like instead of a new album. We had very rough period, so after I cleared my mind and made some important decisions about the band, I concentrated on the EP and these 3 songs, considering that it’s better to have quality than quantity. We really needed something to put us back in life. About the video… Well, we caught last train before the emergency state in our country. We had only one day to film everything, and there was just one camera – Nevena Jovanović. She also edited the video. We did everything on our own, so it was very stressful and exhausting. But we did it!

9) You have been able to edit your works on vinyl and cassette (the album) and on cassette (the e.p.). What do you think about the "revival" of these formats in the world of music?

A: I really love those formats. I’m not a collector myself, but I have some old vinyls and cassettes which I „inherited“ from my mother and I’m really happy that I had an opportunity to have my music on vinyls and tapes and it all happened thanks to Inferno Records. Also, I'm very surprised how quickly they sold out. 

10) You are part of another band, Sigma Epsilon, which seems to us more focused on Thrash. Please, tell us about it.

A: Sigma Epsilon is a project that evolved into a band. It started back in 2014 when few members (my boyfriend Emil Ivošević – vocalist, Stefan Tomić – guitarist, and Nikola Simonović - drummer) of Serbian band Prisoner left the band and started creating their own music. Actually Stefan wrote music, and Emil lyrics. In 2018 I joined band as second guitar player and Luka Matković joined as bass player. We signed on Miner Recordings and released our first EP “Svi putevi vode do smrti”, and also recorded 2 music videos for songs “Svi putevi vode do smrti”, “Kap”, and one lyric video for the song named “Trofej”. At the moment I’m working with Emil on new conceptual album, and I hope that soon we’ll enter the studio again. 

11) You are also playing with Slovenian Hellcats. Already a permanent union?

A: In 2017 Hellcats needed a female guitarist to play with them in Arena Stožice where they’ll be supporting Slovenian punk band Pankrti on their 40-year band anniversary. They couldn’t find someone closer, so they asked me. At first I thought that it will be only for that concert, but we got along nicely, and I really liked them as people and as musicians. Since then they inform me about possible concerts few months earlier, and if I’m not able play, they have a guitarist Jan who helps them out. It’s a bit complicated but it works for now.

12) We take a little out of the musical context to ask you how Serbian society is living all this great problem of coronavirus; and we would like your reflection about all this.

A: Thing are slowly turning back to normal, but it was rough period for most of us, especially musicians. We’re very sad that we had to cancel all our shows. We had a plan to make a big come back this spring after 2 years break. Considering that an even longer break wouldn’t bring us anything good, we decided to publish the EP anyway and promote all the songs from it on social networks as much as possible. We were lucky to film the video a few days before the declaration of the state of emergency in Serbia.

13) What has been, until now, the greatest satisfaction that music has brought you?

A: The fact that I achieved my goal. My goal was to have at least one physical release of my music, a CD that I’ll be able to show to my children and grandchildren one day. To have something behind me that other people will be able to see and hear and maybe find themselves in it. To inspire others. I’ve achieved the part of it, I have 2 releases. The rest will do the time. My new goal is to do what makes me happy, and music certainly makes me happy.

14) We know it's hard enough making plans right now, but what would you expect for Jenner (and your other projects) for the near future?

A: I hope we will play more concerts in the future, and have more music to share with the world.

Entrevista a CASHATE: Responde Eve Korrea, guitarrista y compositora

1) Hemos leído por ahí que a CASHATE le cabe el amplio rótulo de “banda de Metal”. Qué elementos procurás que no falten a la hora de componer?

Unos buenos riffs bien poder jajaja, son imprescindibles y la base de la dieta de nuestra música.

2) También vos te encargás de las letras? Qué cosas o situaciones te inspiran para escribir?

En ocasiones si, y en otras el cantante... o a veces hacemos canciones compartidas. En mi caso personal y para este disco, en el que el 70% de la música y letra compuse yo... las cosas que me inspiran son muchas veces la injusticia social, el comportamiento humano y mi falta de fe en las religiones establecidas, la falta de amor y mi propia apatía.

3) Ya van varios años de historia para CASHATE, pero podemos decir que el nombre se empezó a hacer notar con más fuerza en estos años recientes. Cuáles fueron las bases sobre las que se cimentó ese crecimiento?

La lucha y el trabajo constante detrás de la banda y la ética a la hora de brindar un show, el compromiso con nosotros mismos nos llevo a forjar la banda que siempre quisimos ver vista desde afuera de nosotros.

4) Cómo se inserta la banda dentro de la escena argentina? Ustedes han podido tocar con colegas de diversos estilos…

A lo macho jajja, no... adaptándonos a donde sea sin dejar de ser una banda pesada con mucho power en vivo.

5) Desde hace tiempo vienen trabajando con Alfredo Andrade de Hurling Metal. Contanos un poco acerca de los frutos de esa unión.

Andrade es una persona muy dedicada a cada banda con la que trabaja y se vuelca al 100% por ese motivo nos complementamos muy bien, y los frutos que nos ha dado en estos años trabajando juntos están a la vista, para hay aún hay mucho asfalto por pisar.

6) También tuvieron la oportunidad de salir a mostrar su arte fuera del país. Contanos acerca de esa experiencia, que no tantas bandas argentinas han tenido.

Llevar nuestro Metal a otros países es una experiencia única e inolvidable, que gente de lugares tan lejanos de nuestras casas nos valoren nuestra música es algo que simplemente te llena de orgullo, el conocer nuevas culturas musicales, gastronómicas y espirituales te abre la mente por completo.

7) Quienes son los músicos / bandas que habitualmente escuchás en tu tiempo personal? Considerás que influyen en tu estilo compositivo?

Por lo general escucho de todo un poco, dependiendo del estado de bipolaridad con el que amanezca... y no, para nada me influyen a la hora de componer. Cuando compongo solo pienso en CASHATE, en mi, y en que es lo que quiero transmitir con la guitarra.

8) Contanos acerca del material de estudio de CASHATE –sabemos que se viene algo nuevo pronto- y cómo se puede acceder al mismo. Está editado, o planean editar, en formato físico?

El formato físico ya fue!!! Somos una banda independiente y no contamos con los recursos para editar el disco físico y hacer que valga la pena, o sea distribuirlo por todo el país como quizas se hacia antes, entonces preferimos invertir ese dinero en expandirlo digitalmente por medio de las herramientas con las que contamos los músicos hoy en dia, ya sea Spotify o YouTube ya que en estos tiempos que corren todos estamos atrapados en la barra acrílica.

9) También hay nuevo video ya disponible. Contanos algunos detalles acerca del mismo.

El video de "Ritual" es algo que de verdad me contenta, por que refleja toda nuestra gira por México en Noviembre del pasado año donde se nos puede ver muy a gusto y cómodos con todo lo que nos pasó, también se puede ver a nuestros amigos de ya hace años que nos apoyan en ese país. Salio el 9 de Enero de 2020 y nos sorprendió haber llegado a las 200.000 reproducciones en casi un mes, eso nos ayudó muchísimo para organizar toda la gira por el interior que teníamos planeado para Marzo, Abril y Mayo... pero bueno, luego paso todo esto y quedamos realmente impactados. Pero estamos viendo como podemos retomar (si es que esto se normaliza).

10) Sacándote un poco del plano musical, cuáles son tus impresiones acerca de este año tan difícil por el que estamos atravesando?

Bastante desalentadoras, la economía se venía cayendo a pedazos y esto nos sepultó... ando mucho por todos lados y veo mucha gente sin trabajo, que fueron despedidos o están de licencia sin cobrar, tengo amigos con bares que no tienen ingresos y pierden el alquiler del lugar por que no tienen como pagarlo y por ese mismo motivo tuvieron que despedir al personal... tengo conocidos que están de verdad muy frustrados por no poder hacer absolutamente nada y sinceramente me cuesta ver algo positivo a futuro y lo digo en general, no vamos a poder volver a la normalidad si el valor de todo (absolutamente todo) se va a la mierda y si encima a eso le sumamos que no nos ingresa dinero de ningún lado. Tengo contactos en otros países en los que las cosas no son tan catastróficas por que la economía se mantuvo estable y no corren tanto riesgo cuando esto se vaya normalizando de a poco... pero, Argentina es un país aparte y tristemente vamos a tener que estar más fuertes que nunca para que esto no nos lleva a un estado deplorable, vamos a quedar muy vulnerables.

11) Todo esto del Covid-19 ha alterado por completo la vida de todos, pero cuáles serían los futuros planes, digamos, para cuando todo vaya retomando su cauce?

Los planes pasaron a segundo plano, y solo queda ver y esperar para saber cómo seguir. No podría decirte nada tangible.

12) Evelyn, volvemos a agradecerte por tu tiempo y buena predisposición. Por favor, agregá lo que desees hacer saber y que no te hayamos preguntado.

Y que cuando todo pase, que vengan los mejores tiempos para CASHATE!

Entrevista a EILERA: Celtic Folk desde Francia

En primer lugar, Aurélie, muchas gracias por tu tiempo y amabilidad.

Gracias por mostrar interés y apoyo. :)

1) La música de Eilera se nos presenta como una mezcla entre muchos estilos y sonidos. ¿Cómo podrías describirla para aquellos que leen esta entrevista y aún no la han escuchado?

Una vez me dijeron que Eilera suena como Anneke Van Giersbergen y Tori Amos tocando en un pub irlandés ... Eso es bastante bueno para describirlo :)

Algunos de nuestros álbumes suenan más pesados ​​que otros, suenan más Celtic Folk que otros. Describiría el último álbum "Waves", como Modern Folk.

2) Lo que más nos llamó la atención en tu música, y de hecho te lo hicimos saber, a través de comentarios en YouTube, es tu estilo vocal, con ese acento singular y único. ¿Crees que es un factor distintivo?

Gracias por tus comentarios en Youtube. Y sí, creo que sí. Me lo han dicho muchas veces... Tengo un estilo vocal narrativo. Me gusta que mi voz suene espontánea y que cuente mis historias con detalles en las emociones. No me interesan las voces que suenan demasiado técnicas, como sonar el "más poderoso", por ejemplo. Uso el poder, cuando necesito usar el poder, no más.

3) Has empezado desde muy joven en el mundo de la música. Cuéntanos algo sobre tus comienzos.

Siempre me ha encantado cantar, pero no tenía el tipo de padres que me llevaran a un conservatorio de música a los cinco años. Canté de todos modos en mi habitación y organicé representaciones para mi familia como un juego. Por supuesto, todo esto fue muy ingenuo. Mi primera representación fuera de mi familia ocurrió en el campamento de verano, cuando nuestro maestro me llevó al dormitorio de los niños y me pidió que les cantara para calmarlos antes de dormir. Pero no fue hasta los doce años que comencé a estudiar música y guitarra clásica en una escuela de música. Mi objetivo secreto era cambiar lo antes posible a la guitarra eléctrica y tocar solos de Mark Knopfler. Sin embargo, cuando obtuve una guitarra eléctrica, tenía diecisiete años y mi interés se había centrado en músicos más extremos, como Dave Murray y Chuck Schuldiner. Las primeras partituras que estudié con un maestro fueron de "Ride the Lightning", de Metallica. Era un profesor privado: la música eléctrica en Francia en ese momento no se podía estudiar realmente en las escuelas de música. Fue, y sigue siendo, marginal en Francia.
Me tomó muchos años, hasta 2002, darme cuenta de que negaba mi verdadera naturaleza como músico si seguía centrándome en la guitarra, mientras descuidaba mi voz. No soy una guitarrista natural, pero sí soy una cantante natural. Había sido silenciada por varios factores pesados, en mi educación, en mis escuelas, pero mi verdadera naturaleza finalmente volvió a la superficie. Esto es cuando nació Eilera y pude combinar mis habilidades de composición y canto juntas. Eilera llegó después de varios años tocando la guitarra y componiendo en mi banda de Melódic Death Metal, Chrysalis. Terminé Chrysalis una vez que me quedó claro que Eilera era mi futuro. Irónicamente, fue cuando tomé la decisión de cantar y componer más canciones de pop-rock con Eilera, que el sello de bandas Metal Spinefarm Records (Finlandia), se interesó en trabajar con nosotros. Por lo tanto, me llevaron de vuelta al mundo de los negocios del Metal. Su condición era que "hiciéramos algo como "Facettes" (primer álbum de Eilera), pero más pesado", y esto es lo que he estado haciendo hasta ahora, a excepción de "Waves".

4) Hace algún tiempo, estabas vinculada a la música Metal. ¿Qué queda de Metal hoy, en Eilera?

Una llama adentro, que simplemente no cabe para guardarla en una caja. Puede que haya "viajado" mucho, más allá de las "fronteras metálicas autorizadas" y haya expandido mis habilidades, pero no me he ido del Metal.

5) Eres la compositora de la banda. Cuéntanos qué cosas te inspiran y para escribir qué tipo de canciones.

Las emociones puras me inspiran. Cuando ya no puedo contenerlas, las convierto en canciones. Las tomo de mis experiencias en la vida. Por ejemplo, "Into the Sea" proviene de la soledad viviente. "El ángel que amas, el ángel que odias" viene de sentir un corazón roto. "Precious Moment" proviene de un momento puro de éxtasis compartido, "Soulmates" proviene de hermosas palabras que una vez me dijeron. Hay tantos de esos momentos que tu vida te permitirá vivir! No puedes inventarlos. Debes ser consciente de ellos y estar lista para abrazarlos cuando aparezcan. Esta es la razón por la que no produzco canciones en masa. Esta es mi elección para ir más por lo artístico que lo genérico.

6) Tienes un gran músico en Eilera, exitoso, como Max Lilja (actual cellista de Tarja Turunen y ex Apocalyptica). ¿Qué aporta alguien con su experiencia a la banda?

He sido bendecida con la posibilidad de tocar con muchos grandes músicos en mi viaje musical y Max es uno de ellos.
Max ha grabado el e.p. "Precious Moment", y los l.p. "Fusion" y "Darker Chapter... and "Stars". En los dos primeros, interpretó el papel de un músico de estudio, con partituras que habían sido escritas para él, basadas en su estilo, tal como lo había desarrollado con Apocalyptica. A más tardar, cuando nos conocíamos mejor, era fácil darle más libertad. Al trabajar con él, aprendí hasta dónde podíamos llevar a un violonchelo a tocar extremo, mientras conservamos su hermosa naturaleza. Fue un proceso de aprendizaje y una experiencia enriquecedora, espero que ambos lo miremos con cariño.

7) Tienes, después de cuatro años, un nuevo álbum; y algunos videos nuevos también. Cuéntanos todo lo que quieras sobre este nuevo trabajo. ¿Es conceptual?

La idea detrás de "Waves" era atrapar las olas del océano y convertirlas en ondas emocionales y sonoras. Está hecho para ser un álbum que a veces te tranquiliza y que te da energía en los demás, como lo hace el océano para ti. Es un antídoto contra las fuerzas deshumanizadoras de la ciudad. Hice el álbum después de haber experimentado un agotamiento en mi vida en la ciudad y decidí que, como músico y artista, lo que podía y debía hacer era luchar. Esta frialdad vuelve con música tan orgánica, profunda y estimulante como las olas más energizantes del océano. Lo hice con una forma moderna de música popular, como para unir una forma antigua de hacer canciones junto con un enfoque de sonido moderno.

Cuando comencé a trabajar en "Waves" desde la casa de mis padres, en el sur de Francia, todo lo que tenía conmigo era una guitarra Folk terriblemente mala y mi computadora. Este fue el estudio casero improvisado desde donde crearía los primeros demos.
Cuando comencé a imaginar quiénes serían los mejores músicos para tal álbum, decidí que los tiempos eran perfectos para unir mi pasado en Francia con mi presente en Finlandia, a través del equipo de "Waves". Este equipo estaría compuesto por once personas. Desde Francia: Pereg Ar Bagol (Skiltron) en Boha, que es una gaita particular de la región de Gascuña en Francia. Loïc Tézénas, mi compañero original en Eilera, en la guitarra. Dominique Dijoux, quien era el tecladista en Chrysalis. De Finlandia: Roni Seppänen en la guitarra y Toni Paananen en la batería, quienes tocaron en el disco anterior. Sami Hinkka (Ensiferum) grabó el bajo y Juho Martikainen el contrabajo. Tero Kinnunen (Nightwish) grabó y co-produjo el álbum conmigo. Mikko Karmila (Nightwish, Children of Bodom...) lo mezcló y Mika Jussila (Amorphis, Nightwish...) lo masterizó en Finnvox Studios. También tuvo una aparición especial Jaco Dada de Chile en la guitarra acústica, en la canción "La Quest". Fue un trabajo en equipo internacional, la mayoría de los cuales circuló a través de internet. Se sentía rico en talento y amistad. Enviaría demos de guitarras acústicas y volvería a recibir grabaciones, sobre las cuales rebotaría y obtendría nuevas ideas. Fue un proceso de composición muy interesante y dinámico.

En cuanto a los videos, el primero que salió fue para "Soulmates". Este video es una compilación de los momentos de grabación que hacen al álbum. Para mí era importante que todos pudieran ver el equipo que hizo posible esta aventura, incluidos los nombres de los fanáticos que la habían financiado mediante crowdfunding. Quería expresar mi gratitud a todos.
Luego siguieron dos videos, para "Acuario" y para "Sea Widow". Curiosamente, se hicieron en Finlandia con un francés, llamado Luc Chavarro. Era la primera vez que trabajaba con él y fue muy divertido. "Sea Widow" fue filmado al aire libre, en un clima bastante frío. La parte final donde bailo / enfrento el mar, fue filmada en Jätkäsaari, un área de Helsinki. Filmamos allí justo a tiempo antes de que se hicieran las construcciones, por lo que es precioso pensar que esta área solo existirá como tal en este video ahora...
El video de "Acuario" fue filmado en interiores. Se basó mucho en mi interpretación. Esta experiencia de drama te lleva a cavar profundamente dentro de tus entrañas, para dar suficiente intensidad. Es la historia de un amor imposible, de dos almas de Acuario que nadan cerca una de la otra pero que nunca pueden estar juntas. Es un amor que trae luz y dolor. La experiencia de ese video me recordó lo cerca que puede estar el cantar y actuar.

8) También tienes un nuevo sello, Inverse Records. ¿Cómo ha sido la experiencia de trabajar con ellos, si consideramos que algunos de sus álbumes anteriores se han lanzado de forma independiente?

El álbum ya estaba hecho y el video de "Soulmates" ya estaba lanzado cuando Inverse entró en la escena. Su aporte ha sido lanzar el álbum y correr la voz al respecto, por lo que su misión aún no está completa. Espero que den el apoyo que merece este álbum.

9) Aurélie, lo que vemos en ti como artista es mucha luz, una imagen positiva, llena de energía y carisma. ¿Qué quieres transmitir a quien escucha a Eilera?

Me siento honrada, gracias.
Espero contribuir a ofrecer un espacio más alto a los oyentes, desde donde puedan contemplar un día que ha sido duro para ellos, tal vez estresante, tal vez aburrido y recordar que siempre hay esperanza, que el día siguiente será diferente y mejor, que no están solos y que después de la cresta de la ola llega su cima. Quiero que recuerden lo que se siente tener la curiosidad y el entusiasmo de un niño por la vida y experimentarlo con un corazón abierto que tome la vida al 100%.

10) ¿Cuál ha sido la mayor satisfacción hasta ahora que Eilera te permitió vivir?

Creo que fue mi primera experiencia de estudio profesional para el e.p. "Precious Moment", en 2005. Teníamos un buen presupuesto que nos permitió grabar todo en estudio, lo que se ha convertido en algo raro hoy en día. Estos fueron los días en que el productor Hiili Hiilesmaa me abrió la mente a la idea de producir mis propias canciones. Sucedió el día en que los artistas de cuerdas estaban allí. De repente se levantó de su silla y me invitó a sentarme en ella y me dijo: "Ahora, es tu turno". Experimenté un momento de excitación preocupada, ya que nunca había hecho esto antes, pero no había otra manera que saltar con mis dos pies y muy pronto, encontré la experiencia como una revelación para mí. Necesitaba ese empujón.

11) Fuera de la música, ¿cómo es tu día a día en este 2020 tan terrible que tenemos que pasar? Cuéntanos tu reflexión sobre todo esto ...

Mi trabajo diario ha sido enseñar lengua y cultura francesa en una escuela de adultos de Helsinki y di mis últimos cursos en línea hace dos semanas. Desde entonces, he pasado la mayor parte de mi tiempo en casa, como todos los demás. Cuando se pone muy difícil, salgo a caminar en mi vecindario o troto. Comienzo todas las mañanas con aeróbicos y sesiones de yoga. Se siente tan bien, y la sensación permanece conmigo por el resto del día. Todos los fines de semana, tenemos sesiones de yoga y Qi Cong de skype junto con mi familia de Francia. :)
Mi plan, antes de que llegara el virus Corona, era preparar una banda en vivo y tocar shows, luego pasar al siguiente álbum. Esos planes han sido pospuestos y no sé por cuánto tiempo. Así que me permito pasar mucho tiempo meditando, investigando sobre mí misma, investigando temas que me interesan y buscando progresivamente la dirección del próximo álbum. Lo siento por aquellos que han perdido, o perderán, un ser cercano. Esto podría sucederme en el futuro cercano, no lo sé. Yo misma podría perder mi salud por el virus. Sin embargo, no puedo evitar ver algo optimista en los eventos actuales. Hasta el virus, la locura de nuestro sistema económico, con su avaricia sin fin y sus múltiples abusos, parecía no tener límite. Las múltiples advertencias de la comunidad científica sobre el calentamiento global no se tomaron en serio. La corporación y el mundo político no escucharon la extinción de las especies animales, las poblaciones que se alzaron contra los gobiernos antidemocráticos y codiciosos, el crecimiento global del dolor en todas partes. El interés personal ha estado gobernando el mundo durante demasiado tiempo y la ilusión de que el dinero importa por encima de todo. Nada más pequeño que esta pandemia podría finalmente haber interrumpido esta locura... Pero la pandemia terminará y la lucha por un mundo mejor está lejos de terminar. Por lo tanto, estoy invitando a todos a pensar sobre el mundo que queremos a continuación y a imaginar qué pueden hacer individualmente para contribuir a él. Haré todo lo que pueda pensar por mí misma y, por supuesto, esto incluye nuevas canciones.

12) Finalmente, ¡permítenos decirte que disfrutamos mucho tu arte y que esperamos ver a Eilera algún día en este lado del mundo...! Por favor, dinos todo lo que quieras decir y que no te hemos preguntado.

First of all, thank You very much for your time and kindness.

Thank You for showing interest and support. :)

1) Actually, Eilera's music is presented to us as a mix between many styles and sounds. How could You describe it, for those who read this interview and have not heard You yet?

I was told once that Eilera sounds like Anneke Van Giersbergen and Tori Amos jamming in an Irish pub.. That's pretty good to describe it :)

Some of my albums sound heavier than others, sound more Celtic Folk than others.. I would describe my latest album Waves as modern Folk.

2) What mostly caught our attention in your music, and in fact we made You known it, through comments on YouTube, is your vocal style, with that singular and unique accent. Do you think it is a distinctive factor?

Thank you for your comments in Youtube.. And yes, I think so. I have been told so many times..  I have a narrative vocal style. I like my vocals to sound spontaneous and to tell my stories with details in emotions. I am not interested in over-technical sounding vocals, like sounding the "most powerful" for instance. I use power, when I need to use power, no more.

3) You have started from a very, very young age in the world of music. Please tell us something about your beginnings.

I've always loved singing, but I did not have the kind of parents who took me to a music conservatory at five years old. I sang anyway in my bedroom and I organised representations for my family as a game. This of course was all very naïve.. My first representation ever outside my family happened in summer camp, when our teacher took me to the boys' dormitory and asked me to sing to them, in order to calm them down before sleeping time.. But it wasn't until I was twelve years old that I began to study music and the classical guitar in a music school. My secret objective was to switch as soon as I could to the electric guitar and play solos by Mark Knopfler. By the time I got an electric guitar though, I was seventeen and my interest had turned to more extreme players, such as Dave Murray and Chuck Schuldiner. The first tabs I studied with a teacher were from Ride the Lightning, by Metallica. He was a private teacher - electric music in France at that time could not really be studied in music schools. It was, and still remains, marginal in France. 
It took me many years, until 2002, to realise that I was denying my real nature as a musician if I kept on focusing on the guitar, while neglecting my voice. I am not a natural guitarist, but I am a natural singer. I had been muted by several heavy factors, in my education, in my schools but my true nature finally came back to the surface. This is when Eilera was born and I got to combine my composing and my singing skills together. Eilera came after several years of playing the guitar and composing in my band of melodic Death-Metal Chrysalis. I ended Chrysalis once it had become clear to me that Eilera was my future. Ironically enough, it was when I had made this decision to sing and compose more pop-rock songs with Eilera that the Metal label Spinefarm Records (Finland) got interested in working with us. They thus took me back into the Metal business world. Their condition was that I "Do like Facettes (*Eilera's first demo album), but heavier" and this is what I have been doing this far, at the exception of Waves. 

4) Some time ago, You were linked to Metal music. What remains of Metal today, in Eilera?

A flame inside, that just won't fit into a box.. I may have travelled far, beyond the authorised metallic borders and I have expanded my skills, but I am not gone.

5) You are the songwriter in the band. Tell us what things inspire You, and to write what kind of songs?

Pure emotions inspire me. When I cannot contain them anymore, I turn them into songs. I take them from my experiences in my life. For example, Into the Sea comes from living solitude. The Angel You Love, the Angel You Hate comes from feeling a broken heart. Precious Moment comes from a pure moment of shared ecstasy, Soulmates comes from beautiful words I was once told.. There are as many of those moments that your life will allow you to live. You cannot make those up. You should be aware of them and be ready to embrace them when they show up. This is the reason why I don't mass-produce songs. This is my choice to go artistic rather than generic..

6) You have a great musician in Eilera, successful, like Max Lilja. What does someone with his experience contribute to the band?

I have been blessed with the chance of playing with many great musicians in my musical journey and Max is one of them. 
Max has recorded on Precious Moment EP, Fusion Lp and Darker Chapter... and stars Lp. On the first two, he played the part of a studio musician, with scores that had been written for him, based on his style, as he had developed it with Apocalyptica. On the latest, when we knew each other better, it was easy to give him more freedom. From working with him, I learned how far we could push a cello into extreme playing, while preserving its beautiful nature.. It was both of a learning-process and an elevating experience hopefully for both of us and I look back on it fondly.

7) You have, after four years, a new album; and some new videos too. Tell us everything You want about this new work. Is it conceptual?

The idea behind Waves was to catch the Ocean waves and to turn them into emotional and sound waves. It is made to be an album that soothes you at times and that energies you at others, like the Ocean does to you. It is an antidote to the dehumanising forces of the city.. I made the album after I had experienced a burn out in my city-life and I decided that as a musician and an artist, what I could and should do, was to fight this coldness back with music as organic, deep and stimulating as the most energising waves of the ocean. I did it with a modern form of Folk music, as to unite an ancient way of making songs together with a modern sound approach.

When I started working on Waves from my parents' house, in southern France, all I had with me was a terribly bad Folk guitar and my computer. This was the improvised home-studio from where I would create the first demos.
As I started to imagine who would be the best players for such an album, I decided that the times were perfect for uniting my past in France with my present in Finland, via the Waves team. This team would comprise of eleven persons. From France:  Pereg Ar Bagol (Skiltron) on the Boha, which is a particular bagpipes from the Gascony region in France. Loïc Tézénas, my original partner in Eilera, on the guitar. Dominique Dijoux, who was the keyboard player in Chrysalis. From Finland: Roni Seppänen on the guitar and Toni Paananen on drums, who both played on the previous record. Sami Hinkka (Ensiferum) recorded the bass and Juho Martikainen the contrabass. Tero Kinnunen (Nightwish) recorded and coproduced the album with me. Mikko Karmila (Nightwish, Children of Bodom...) mixed it and Mika Jussila (Amorphis, Nightwish..) mastered it in Finnvox Studios. I also got a guest appearance from Jaco Dada from Chile on the acoustic guitar, on the song la Quest. It was an international teamwork, most of which circulated via the internet. It felt rich of talent and of friendship. I would send demos of acoustic guitars and I would receive recordings back, over which I would bounce and get new ideas from. It was a very interesting and dynamic composing process.. 

As for the videos, the first one that came out was for Soulmates. This video is a compilation of the recording moments that make the album. It was important for me that everybody could see the team that made this adventure possible, including the names of the fans who had financed it via crowdfunding. I wanted to express my gratitude to everyone.
Two videos have followed after that, for Aquarius and for Sea Widow. Funnily enough, they were made in Finland with a French man, called Luc Chavarro. It was the first time I worked with him and it was good fun. Sea Widow was shot outdoor, in pretty cold weather. The final part where I dance/confront the sea was shot in Jätkäsaari, an area of Helsinki. We filmed there just in time before constructions were made, so it is precious to think that this area will only exist as such in this video now.. 
The video for Aquarius was shot indoor. It relied a lot on my interpretation. This experience of drama takes for you to dig deep inside of your guts, in order to give enough intensity. It is the story of an impossible love, from two Aquarius souls that swim close to each other but can never really be together. It is a love that both brings light and hurt.. The experience of that video reminded me how close singing and acting can be. 

8) You also have a new label, Inverse Records. How has the experience of working with them been, if we consider that some of your previous albums had been released independently?

The album was already done and the Soulmates video was already out when Inverse entered the picture. Their input has been to release the album and to spread the word about it, so their mission is not complete yet. I hope they give the support this album deserves.

9) Aurélie, what we see in You as an artist is a lot of light, a positive image, full of energy and charisma. What do You want to transmit to whoever listens to Eilera?

I am honoured, thank you. 
I hope I contribute to offering a higher space to the listeners, from where they can contemplate a day that has been hard on them, maybe stressful, maybe boring and remember that there is always hope, that the next day will be different and better, that they are not alone and that after the crest of the wave comes its top. I want them to remember what it feels like to have the curiosity and the enthusiasm of a child for life and to experience it with an open heart that takes life in 100%.

10) What has been the greatest satisfaction so far that Eilera allowed You to live?

I believe it was my first professional studio experience for Precious Moment EP, back in 2005. We had a good budget that allowed us to record everything in studio, which has become a rare thing nowadays. These were the days when producer Hiili Hiilesmaa opened my mind to the idea of producing my own songs. It happened on the day that the strings players were there. He suddenly stood off his chair and invited me to sit in it and said to me: "Now, it's your turn." I experienced a moment of worried excitement, as I had never done this before, but there was no other way than to jump in with my both feet and very soon, I found the experience to be a revelation for me. I needed that push. 

11) Outside of music, how is your day to day in this 2020 so terrible that we have to go through? Tell us your reflection about all this...

My dayjob has been to teach French language and culture in an adult school of Helsinki and I gave my last courses online two weeks ago. Since then I have been spending most of my time home, like everyone else. When it gets too hard, I go for a walk in my neighbourhood or I jog. I begin my every morning with aerobics and yoga sessions. It feels so good and the feeling stays with me for the rest of the day. Every weekend, we have Skype Qi Cong and yoga sessions together with my family from France. :) 
My plan, before the Corona virus arrived, was to prepare a live band and play shows, then move to the next album. Those plans have been postponed and I don't know for how long. So I allow myself to spend much time meditating, researching myself, researching topics that interest me and progressively find the direction of the next album.. I am sorry for those who have lost, or will loose, a close one. This might happen to me in the near future, I don't know. I might myself loose my health to the virus. Yet I cannot help but see something optimistic in the current events. Until the virus, the madness of our economic system, with its endless greed and multiple abuses, seemed to have no limit. The multiple warnings from the scientific community over global warming were not taken seriously. The extinction of animal species, the populations rising against anti-democratic and greedy governments, the global growing of pain everywhere, were not heard by the corporate nor the political world. Personal interest has been ruling the world for too long and the illusion, that money matters above all else. Nothing smaller than this pandemic could have finally interrupted this madness.. But the pandemic will end and the fight for a better world is far from over. So, I am inviting everyone to think about the world we want next and to imagine what they can do individually to contribute to it. I will do everything I can think of myself and of course, this includes new songs.

12) Finally, let us tell You that we greatly enjoy your art, and that we hope to see Eilera one day on this side of the world...! Please, tell us everything that You want to say, and that we haven't asked You.

Thank you very much. I would love to visit you in Argentina and sing with you. I have never been to south America before, even though I have friends there, in Chile, in Brazil, maybe soon in Argentina? I am really looking forward to.. Hopefully it happens. CORINNE VAN DEN BRAND (ACROSTICHON, RAZEND, THE COVERING) Interview

1. Corinne: It’s a huge pleasure to make this interview with you! First at all, how had your first steps in music been, at the end of the eighties?
   I was into metal since I was 13-14 years old and went to as many concerts that I could. When my brother Jos started playing guitar with a school mate Richard, I wanted to be part of that . At first we just goofed around with silly songs but then we found a drummer we really became a band and started writing real songs.
2. Please, tell us a little about Acrostichon’s first recordings. Why did you register so many demos between 1989 and 1991?
   Many demo`s ? Only 2 called Prologue and Lost Remembrance.  It wasn`t so unusual back then. We don`t count the rehearsal tape as a demo and neither the live tapes. After the second demo we got a record deal and we recorded Engraved in Black. It took about a year before it was finally released. That was really not funny and a bit annoying. In 1995 we released our second cd called Sentenced. It was a bit more thrash metal . I really like that one. Too bad for the sound on that one. Could have been a lot heavier.
3. Tell us the characteristics of both studio álbums.
   Engraved in Black has a lot of demo material on it and is lot more death/doom than Sentenced which is more thrashier. That`s easy to explain because the first album was mostly written by Richard and the second one by Jos and Michel who had replaced Richard .
4. What can you tell us about “Live” VHS? Why didn’t you never release it again, on DVD?
   We never released it officially in the first place. It was a tape from our release party gig and was just for our own collection. We copied it for some friends too of course. How it ever ended up as an official tape in some traders lists I don`t know.
5. Why did the band split up in 1995?
   The band didn`t split up in 1995. Our latest demo tape was recorded in 1996-1997. After that I left the band and the band continued with Tjerk on vocals but they soon changed their name to Outburst.
6. And what did you do during the fourteen years between 1995 and 2009?
   I moved to Belgium and lived my life. I played percussion in a samba band for some years but that was it. Hahaha.
7. How did you combine your both roles, of Woman, and extreme music vocalist?
   It never was a big deal to me. I always was one of the boys. It annoyed me that people would bring it up. I always was a bit of a tomboy .
8. Why did you take the decision of start again in 2009?
   I moved back to Holland in 2008 and got in touch with the other bandmembers again on a party. A friend asked if we would play on his festival as a co-headliner with Holy Moses. We accepted and that gig was truly amazing. We released that gig on an album released on Badger records. Very fond memories of that night. We did a few shows more with Possessed and one with the original The Gathering but that was it.
9. Did you feel that all that old magic was present, again?
   Yeah, on our first reunion gig I couldn`t stop smiling. It wasn`t really metal. Hahaha. It was just so great and I enjoyed every second of it.
10. Please, let’s talk about “Return to Killburg”. Was it released on vynil format only? Why?
    Why not ? Badger records offered us a deal with only vinyl and we loved the idea. The artwork looks very good on this format.  When you hold an album it is something special. It`s almost like a sacred ritual. Much more feeling to it than a cd.
11. Let’s talk about Razend, now. How did it arise in your life?
    Funny story. Acrostichon became Outburst when singer Tjerk joined and in 2013 Tjerk left and I was asked to sing again . So in a way the circle is round . In a band again with my brother Jos. How cool is that !!!
12. Your Razend’s vocals are basically different to Acrostichon’s. Any special reason for that?
    Different band, different vocals. It`s so easy to go back to grunting again but I really didn`t want to do that. It`s thrash metal, not death metal so I can vary a lot more with Razend than I ever could do with Acrostichon. Always improve yourself. I`m not happy with doing the same trick over and over again.
13. There’s a demo, “White Goat”. Please, tell us something about it.
    It`s a 5 track demo. We recorded it for record companies and bookers but we will officially release it very soon as a bonus on our second cd. It`s a thrash metal demo with no grunts at all. On our second cd there will be some grunts.
14. And, of course, we want you to tell us something about The Covering, too…
    The Covering is a 80`s metal coverband. We play songs from Saxon to Morbid Angel. It started out as a one time only gig but it was so succesful and we enjoyed it so much we decided to continue and ever since we had a lot of gigs. Really fun to do and a good learning school for me. I have to sing all different styles and that`s pretty difficult sometimes.
15. Which had been your better and worse moments in your musical career?
    We did play some great shows with great bands. I really am honored that I took part to the rise of death metal. I really appreciate that I got to go to concerts in the 80`s.
16. Which are the dreams that you would love to see realized?
    I would love to play in South America someday . Think that will be an awesome experience. Wellll, I would like to play everywhere around this globe .
17. Please, tell us about your plans for this year. Do you have a new record in mind?
    Well, we are finishing our second recordings for Razend right now. It will be available within a few months. It will be a bit faster then our first recording.  And we are releasing an album with a side project I am doing with two friends . Just for fun . It will be hardcore meets grindcore and I will pick up my bass again fot that one.
18. Corinne: Thanks a million for your time and your answers… We really hope to see you playing live in Argentina someday… Is there anything that you would like to add?

Entrevista a Angel, Voz y Guitarra de TIERRA SANTA, antes de su segunda visita a Argentina

Merced a la gentileza de Diego Perri, encargado de prensa de la productora Hellnoise, pudimos entablar diálogo con Angel San Juan, Voz y Guitarra de los españoles TIERRA SANTA, antes de su segundo desembarco por estas tierras, para presentarse el sábado 11 de abril en Uniclub...

OXIDO:  Antes que nada, Ángel, queremos expresarte nuestra gratitud por entregarnos estos minutos de tu tiempo. Dinos: podemos afirmar hoy en día que el rótulo “Heavy Metal” ha quedado definitivamente atrás para TIERRA SANTA?

ANGEL SAN JUAN: Es un placer responder a tus preguntas.

Heavy Metal, la pregunta es, ¿Qué es el Heavy metal, que significa y cuáles son los parámetros de esta denominación? La respuesta es fácil, a cada persona que preguntes te dirá algo completamente distinto.
Yo viví aquella época y esto es lo que se, el rotulo Heavy Metal es un género musical que nació a principios de los setenta en el Reino Unido, nadie sabe realmente cual fue la primera banda del Heavy Metal, para mi Black Sabbath y Deep Purple  fueron determinantes, pero Judas Priest junto con Saxon y Iron Maiden acuñaron realmente lo que se definió como la nueva ola del Heavy Metal Británico a finales de los setenta y principios de los ochenta.
Con todo esto te puedo decir que nuestra música es lo más cercano al Heavy Metal que puedas encontrar, Tierra Santa es una banda de Rock duro, y en nuestras canciones puedes encontrar desde el más clásico Heavy Metal, hasta un vals.
Esta es mi opinión.

O: Cómo han estado yendo las cosas con vuestro nuevo guitarrista, y a qué se debió el alejamiento de un miembro fundador como Arturo Morras?

ASJ: Arturo dejo el grupo por motivos personales, me siento muy orgulloso de haber compartido todo lo que supone estar en esta banda, no solo con Arturo, sino con todas las personas que han hecho posible que hoy estemos aquí.

Ahora está con nosotros Eduardo Zamora, es un gran músico, ha sido ideal escogerlo por varios motivos, lo conocemos desde hace mucho tiempo y siempre ha estado vinculado a esta banda de alguna manera, ha colaborado en muchos de nuestros discos y es sin duda uno de los mejores guitarristas que hay hoy en día, esto es algo que podrán comprobar nuestros seguidores en los conciertos.

 Además es un tío muy divertido y una gran persona, algo esencial para estar en este grupo.

O:  Cuáles son tus sentimientos acerca del cambio de dirección musical de TIERRA SANTA a partir de “Mejor Morir en Pié”, acentuado luego en “Caminos de Fuego”? Fue algo planeado a conciencia, o simplemente fue fluyendo?

ASJ: Mejor morir en pie, fue un disco especial en el cual dedique la temática de las canciones,  en profundizar de alguna manera en mi interior desde el punto de vista más personal.  ¿ Musicalmente ? si, obviamente necesitaba otro tipo de atmósfera para expresar este sentimiento, pero no fue un cambio de dirección musical para mi, y Caminos de fuego mucho menos.

O: Si tuvieras que elegir uno de tus álbumes como el más emblemático, con cuál te quedarías?

ASJ: En ese término, me resulta imposible decidirme por uno, sin tener  en cuenta otro

O: Cuáles fueron las primeras ideas para crear “Esencia”? Cómo surgió esa intención de regrabar viejo material, con nuevo sonido?

ASJ: Bueno, son canciones que significan algo especial en nuestra discografía y grabarlas de nuevo a día de hoy con otro sonido, quizás haciéndoles más justicia aportando algún arreglo y en general con más experiencia, es algo así como rejuvenecer un poco.

O: Quiénes han sido tus músicos españoles favoritos, de todos los tiempos?

ASJ: Barón Rojo, sin duda el mejor grupo español de rock duro de todos los tiempos

O:  Cómo es la situación musical en España hoy? Cuéntanos tus impresiones más positivas y también algunos aspectos negativos…

ASJ: No es este realmente el mejor momento musical que España ha vivido, pero hay que estar a las duras y a las maduras, de eso se trata, de seguir disfrutando de música en directo y de apostar por el futuro.

O: Esta gira incluye varias presentaciones en un territorio hostil no sólo al Heavy Metal / Hard Rock en general, sino especialmente a las propuestas en otros idiomas que no sean el inglés: hablamos de Estados Unidos. Con qué se encuentran cuándo visitan ese país? Cómo es el público norteamericano de TIERRA SANTA?

ASJ: Básicamente, nuestros seguidores en Estados Unidos son latinoamericanos, aunque el idioma nunca ha sido una barrera para este grupo, la música tiene el poder de traspasar fronteras de todo tipo.

Ciertamente las letras es un punto fuerte de la banda, pero te sorprendería la cantidad de seguidores que tenemos por toda Europa que les gusta Tierra Santa, tal y como es, y se interesa por traducir las letras para poder entenderlas.

O: Qué recuerdos tienen de su primera visita a Argentina? Personalmente estuve allí y me llevé en las retinas y oídos un show inolvidable…
